What Are the ​Causes of Sleep Apnea?

  • Throat muscles and tongue relax more than normal.
  • Obesity or excess weight around the neck.
  • Large neck (for men: greater than 16.5", for women: greater than 15")
  • A naturally narrow throat.
  • Tongue and tonsils are large compared to the opening into your windpipe
  • The shape of the head and neck may cause a smaller airway size in the mouth and throat area.
  • Family history of sleep apnea may put one at increased risk.
  • Alcohol, sedatives or tranquilizers can relax throat muscles.
  • Smokers are three times as likely to have OSA. Smoking may increase the amount of inflammation and fluid retention in the upper airway.
